The 4-Way Test

On my way home from work, I pass by the Rajah Soliman park in front of Malate Church. A small marker there lists 'The 4-Way Test'. It is not an uncommon sight for me, as I see this marker everywhere in Manila I go. But something in that marker makes a lot of sense to me, that I re-read it every chance I get. To those who do not know what it is, here it is:
The 4-Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

It's fairly easy to remember, and I'm sure you would find that it is applicable to so many things. But mostly, I think of this test when I'm contemplating moral issues and other serious things.

Whenever you can't decide if what you're about to do, try to check each of  your alternatives using the 4-Way Test. In one way or another, you may find doing this helpful to see which alternative would work better. In my opinion, it is an effective way to weigh your options and come to a decision you may eventually be proud of making.
